I admin a typical Websphere, code is developed in DEV, validated in QA, promoted to PROD. Recently the powers that be have added LabManager into our environment. We now essentially have about 7 pseudo-QA environments. Ok, I can live with that. But, recently they're trying to change policy to where apps can be promoted straight to production from ANY of those 7 QA environments. I of course voiced my anger, and was promptly told to shut up. Now at least, I get a chance to list my reasons why this is a bad idea. The problem, I never really thought about the reasons, it's just always been that way and admins everywhere know that right ? I need help coming up with some more reasons. So far I have 1) those environments are not 'mine', so I'm not familliar with the new apps and my first exposure to them is when they hit production 2) the dev teams are not great at remember which version of code actually went where ... so I'm never sure things are being tested properly 3) I have no idea who has access to those machines and what system settings are being changed 4) they use Linux ... Production is Solaris ! 5) the environments are not alike because a given app will work on one server, but not the next. Just brainstorming, any suggestions are appreciated (except look for a new job, I already thought of that one). Thanks !
